A Nintendo aproveitou a liquidação dos ativos do Embracer Group para adquirir o Shiver Entertainment, um estúdio especialista em “ports” de jogos para Switch.
Fundado em 2012 em Miami e responsável pelas versões Switch de Scribblenauts Showdown, Hogwarts Legacy: Hogwarts Legacy, Mortal Kombat 11 e Mortal Kombat 1, a Shiver Entertainment fazia parte da família de estúdios Saber Interactive desde dezembro de 2021, mas permaneceu ancorada na Embracer quando o Saber se separou do grupo sueco no início do ano.
A Nintendo está comprando 100% das ações do estúdio, fortalecendo assim o seu pequeno acervo de estúdios sediados na América do Norte, que inclui o Retro Studios desde 2001 e o Next Level Games desde 2021, enquanto aumenta sua capacidade de desenvolvimento para o console sucessor do Switch, que está planejado para 2025. O foco do Shiver permanecerá o mesmo, continuando a auxiliar no desenvolvimento de versões para Nintendo Switch de jogos feitos por outros estúdios.
A Nintendo continua assim o seu crescimento em 2024, ainda que lento, tendo passado de 7.317 para 7.724 funcionários entre março de 2023 e março de 2024. A empresa é historicamente cautelosa na área de aquisições de estúdios e tende a incorporar equipes já testadas em projetos menores, como foi o caso da Next Level Games, que já havia desenvolvido títulos como Mario Smash Football e Luigi’s Mansion 3 antes de se tornar subsidiária da Nintendo.
Durante a última apresentação de resultados da Nintendo no início do mês, o CEO Shuntaro Furukawa afirmou que “o processo de desenvolvimento de jogos vai se tornar inevitavelmente mais longo, mais complexo e mais avançado” e a Nintendo deve, portanto, “investir ativamente na expansão dos nossos recursos de desenvolvimento de jogos”.
